How do you make your voice stronger?

Your singing voice, that is. I'm trying to hit high notes but when I try, my voice gets all soft and quiet, almost whiny, or operatic. So how do I make my voice have the same strongness (idt thats a word lol) as if i were singing lower notes?? Basically, I wanna sound like that girl from Evanescence :P
