Where do I go to research my ethnic background?

I asked my family members (I'm researching my maternal background) and I have very little to no info. Where do I go? What do I do? I know my paternal background (Tanzanian, born & raised in NYC). I wanna trace back my maternal ancestry (my mother is African-American and her descendants have been in the Americas for some time).
