What can i do to make my speakers work on my laptop?

I have a Dell Studio 1737 that has the IDT audio driver downloaded and installed and gets sound to headphones once they are plugged in but whenever nothing is plugged in the built in speakers do not work and all the drivers say working properly and no scans find a problem
